Moving from defining digital experiences to understanding how they are built.

As a Product Manager, I'm used to thinking about problems, requirements, user journeys and the outcomes a product should deliver.

But recently, I've been learning to look at digital products from another angle: the frontend development side.

I wanted to understand more of what happens between defining a feature and seeing it work in a browser.

That curiosity led me to start learning HTML, CSS and JavaScript through NextGen Tech Training and Upskill by Genesys.

And it has been an interesting experience.

A user interface is more than what appears on the screen

My early HTML exercises introduced me to page structure, semantic elements, links, images and forms.

When I built a student registration page, I worked with different form controls, including text fields, radio buttons, checkboxes, dropdowns and text areas.

It made me think about something I already consider in Product Management: the user experience starts with the small details.

A form should not simply collect information. It should make it clear what information is needed and how someone should provide it.

CSS has changed how I think about layouts

Working through CSS exercises, especially Flexbox, helped me understand how elements are arranged and how layout decisions affect the overall experience.

I practised with pricing layouts, coloured boxes and responsive arrangements.

I also explored CSS animations through the Ferris Wheel and Moon Orbit exercises.

There were moments when an element refused to sit where I expected. I had to revisit the instructions, inspect the properties and understand how one change affected the rest of the layout.

It taught me to approach problems more deliberately instead of changing values randomly until something looked right.

JavaScript introduced me to product logic from another perspective

One of my JavaScript exercises involved building a student grading system.

The task required collecting student information, calculating scores and displaying remarks based on specific conditions.

This was an interesting connection to Product Management.

A feature needs clearly defined rules. Different inputs can produce different outcomes, and the logic needs to account for those possibilities.

Learning to express those rules in code has helped me appreciate the implementation side of product requirements.

What I'm taking back into Product Management

I'm beginning to see how useful technical understanding can be when working with development teams.

It doesn't mean a Product Manager needs to become an expert in every technology.

For me, it means being able to ask better questions, understand technical conversations more clearly, appreciate implementation challenges and make more informed product decisions.

I'm still early in this learning journey. I have plenty more to practise and understand.

But I'm enjoying the process of connecting product thinking with the practical work of building.

The more I learn about building digital experiences, the more I appreciate the thinking that goes into making them useful.

What has learning a technical skill changed about the way you approach your work?
